Post 1: Scavenging the Pawn of the Dead

Where do you get a free laptop?  Beats me.  Let’s go with cheap. For me, that quest started at the all-mighty pawn shop!  I  scavenged my favorite money pit (if not a “gold mine”, then a “gold chain mine” of goods you need and things no one should ever need) and asked for the cheapest laptop they had. Named Popeye, after the resident monkey of the pawn shop, for $100 including tax, the chaos began.

With more miles on it than a John Madden bus, Popeye possesses no software (outside of a necessary operating system), a hard drive that boots up sounding like a kid eating Pop Rocks, and a battery that only charges only when the computer is upside-down. Good enough for grunt work.

Expensive things evaluate easily; we shoot for close-to-free.

This first journal entry took form in Notepad (a free app).  I will scour them Internets for, install, and use a new type of free software for general business needs.  These include:

Free Word processors

Free anti-virus (antivirus) software

Free photo editors

Free CRM software

Free thought organizers

Free webpage software

And other possible essentials.

Each one of these tools from the web will be dissected on its usefulness and usability.  I’m not dealing with code; only the end results.  Besides my personal use, they will scrutinized by other customers reviews, company history, technical support, age, updates, sniff test, and more.  No safety nets of pay software; free or bust.

Until later, remember what TLC said: “Free your mind, and the rest will follow.”

Huzzah y’all!
